A severe thunderstorm produced wind gusts up to 80 mph and quarter-size hail from Davie to Fort Lauderdale. The wind blew down trees and power lines which sparked a fire that destroyed a $50 thousand house, and caused electric outages to 5,000 customers. A large tent was destroyed by thunderstorm winds, slightly injuring one person and ruining $5 thousand in fireworks.
The roof of an outer building on the campus of Plantation High School was partially peeled off. Approximately 150 square feet of roof covering material was on the ground. Water entered the building, but no structural damage was noted to the steel joists. A few small trees were uprooted.
A large tree fell on a mobile home in Pompano Beach, displacing 5 people living in the home. This was associated with a band of gusty showers and thunderstorms, and nearby wind reports indicated speeds were probably in the 40-50 mph range.
