Heavy rains caused numerous streams to come out of their banks, resulting in significant flash flooding in Giles County. Some streams that flooded included Little Walker Creek, Big Walker Creek, Sugar Run, and Wabash Creek.||Numerous roads were closed across Giles County, and at least 20 roads were damaged due to flood waters Emergency Management reported 93 homes in the county were affected by flood waters. Two homes were destroyed and 31 received major damage. Flooding along Wolf Creek caused damage to several homes and properties in the town of Narrows. Several houses were also flooded by Walker Creek.
Several news outlets reported the closure of heavily traveled Route 460 due to road damage and a large mudslide. The mudslide occurred about five miles east of the West Virginia line. VDOT provided road repair estimates.
The USGS gage on Walker Creek at Bane rose above Minor flood stage of 11 feet early on the 13th and crested at 15.73 feet (16,700 cfs) in the afternoon. Moderate flood stage is 14 feet. According to USGS data this would have been approximately a 25-year flood event (0.04 annual chance of occurrence). Several roads were closed but no structures were reported to have flooded. This was the 8th highest stage on record and the highest stage since 3/13/2010. VDOT reported substantial flood damage to several roads in the county as well. A power pole was snapped by flood waters along Green Valley Road due to flooding from a tributary of Walker Creek, Big Spring Branch.
