Major flash flooding reported. Almost 100 homes either flooded or surrounded by water. Hundreds of people evacuated with two people rescued from the high waters. Dozens of roads were washed out, damaged and/or closed during the height of the flash flood.
Heavy rain with amounts of 5 to 7 inches caused flash flooding. The rain which fell from the 16th to the 18th was due to the remnants of hurricane Ivan. 500 homes and 30 businesses were damaged. 50 water rescues were reported. The hardest hit areas were Tunkhannock, Eaton Township, Nicholson, Exeter, Meshoppen, and Laceyville. In Nicholson, the Shadow Brook did major damage. The county declared a state of emergency and closed all roads to the public early Saturday morning. In addition the Susquehanna River had major flooding.
Early in the afternoon of Wednesday, May 12th, a thunderstorm developed over Miller and Shaver Mountains south of Tunkhannock in Wyoming County. The thunderstorm was nearly stationary and at times had radar estimated rainfall rates over 4 inches per hour. Radar estimated rainfall totals exceeded 6 inches in just a few hours time and caused massive flash flooding of the Moneypenny Creek which is along Thurston Hollow Road in Eaton township. The water carved a swath of damage and scattered debris along Thurston Hollow Road which was totally devastated. Total damage estimates have exceeded 500,000 dollars.
