Strong thunderstorm wind blew the roof off a commercial building, and snapped numerous large tree limbs. At least $35,000 in damage occurred across Ottawa County from debris removal and damage to the utility infrastructure during this severe thunderstorm.
Strong thunderstorm wind damaged the roof of the elementary school, blew HVAC units from the roof of the high school, damaged windows and buses, and blew down trees and power poles. The damage delayed the start of the school year for the district.
Severe thunderstorms moved across eastern Oklahoma during the evening of May 23rd. Thunderstorm winds estimated at 70 miles an hour in McAlester destroyed a car wash, tore the roofs off two buildings, and overturned two tractor-semitrailers in the northeast part of town. Windows were blown out of a flower shop in downtown McAlester, and numerous power lines were blown down in McAlester. Strong thunderstorm winds blew down trees and power lines in Locust Grove and in Stigler, and power lines were blown down from Chouteau to Locust Grove.
