There was an exceptional swath of hail damage, approximately 2.5 miles wide and 5 miles long. Many trees were completely stripped of their foliage, including an entire hillside, which bore the brunt of the storm and appeared entirely bare. Widespread hail damage was also reported to vehicles and homes within the affected area. Spotters reported golf ball sized hail. The hail accumulated in some areas making the ground white and roads slippery.
Trained spotters reported golf ball size hail in Nanticoke. Thunderstorm winds also brought down more than 100 trees in Greenwod Park and one picnic shelter was closed due to damage from the storm. A tree was blown onto a truck in Barker but the driver was uninjured.
A fast moving squall line with embedded thunderstorms developed along a cold front as it crossed central New York during the midday hours. A thunderstorm cell became severe across northern Broome county and produced large hail. A swath of hail ranging from pea sized to dime sized was reported in an area from Johnson City northward to Choconut Center. A short time later, hail to one inch in diameter was observed by a skywarn spotter in Castle Creek. Hail even covered the ground for a time in this vicinity.
