A 45 year old male, riding a moped, struck a downed tree on State Route 17, near County Road 200 North. The driver was ejected and pronounced dead at a local hospital. The time noted for this entry was when the accident happened. Thunderstorms were not occurring at the time, but had occurred on the 3rd.
Numerous roads were flooded with standing water ranging from six inches to a few feet in depth. Flooding occurred along the Tippecanoe River which flows through the northern part of the county. Little Yellow Creek, which is fed by the Tippecanoe River, rose dramatically over a 24 hour period as rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches were observed. This high water resulted in a portion of County Road 825 East, north of County Road 600 North, being washed out, roughly 12 feet deep. The road gave way under a SUV that was traveling along the road. This SUV made it across, but a second SUV behind this first did not and got wedged in the opening. The father of the female driver attempted to rescue his daughter and 2 grandchildren, but was swept about 50 yards downstream before grabbing onto branch. He stood up in the water on a log for about 20 minutes and was rescued with no serious injuries.
At least 6 homes were damaged by trees or tree limbs, with numerous other homes suffering lost shingles, siding and fascia. Numerous vehicles were also damaged from falling trees. Damage of at least $150,000 is estimated.
