An area of thunderstorms developed in central South Carolina accompanied by large hail. Lightning hit a tree at Fort Jackson, then jumped to tents nearby, killing one soldier and injuring four others. Training had been suspended due to approaaching thuderstorm and soldiers had gone to their respective tents as per thunderstorm preparedness procedures.
