What the reports say
Written by National Weather Service staff at the time of the event · public domain
High water due to flash flooding from earlier in the day continued to cause impassable roadways into the evening hours on Saturday, July 1st throughout the village of Herkimer. Runoff from flash flooding caused the West Canada Creek at Kast Bridge to exceed moderate flood stage at 3:40 PM EST, crest at 4:30 PM EST and fall below flood stage by 7:12 PM EST.
The combination of heavy rain and snow melt led to the West Canada Creek to overflow its banks from Hinckley Reservoir down to Kast Bridge and slightly farther downstream. Local news stations shared pictures and videos of flooding occurring in spots along the entire path of the creek from Poland to Newport and Middleville with water encroaching on river-adjacent homes, roadways, and local businesses.
