The outflow wind gust was funneled between 2 adjacent buildings along Piedmont Road in Huntington. A man was sitting outside on his second floor apartment landing, reading his Bible. The wind blew out a window unit from the adjacent building and dropped onto him. The 73 year old man was killed.
Numerous trees and large branches were blown down. Nearly 33,000 customers lost electricity. Three homes had major damage and 4 others had minor damage. A front canopy sign was ripped off a business in Huntington. A garage roof to a funeral home was damaged in Milton. The public infrastructure damage assessment was around $391,000.
Scattered locations in the city had trees down, including around Ritter Park. A 300 year white oak tree fell along 11th Avenue. The tree snapped and splintered at the trunk. The female homeowner said, everyone understands, this is like a death in the family to me. The fallen tree did cause some minor damaged to the roof of her house and broke a few windows too. A roof on a 7th Avenue warehouse was damaged. The wind blew through some broken windows to help lift a portion of the roof. Also, a section of a side cinder block wall also fell. Both the roof and the wall were not anchored well. A tree fell onto power lines on 8th Avenue. A trained spotted at Marshall University estimated the wind gusts at 65 to 70 mph with many large branches blown down.
