What the reports say
Written by National Weather Service staff at the time of the event · public domain
Severe Thunderstorm winds impacted the southern part of Salt Lake County in conjunction with Utah County Storms. Trees up to 12" diameter snapped in Eastr Millcreek. Numerous power poles down southern portion of County. Large trees uprooted in Sugarhouse area. Damage estimate from regional insurance claim estimate.
A microburst occurred near the intersection of Utah State Route 111 and New Bingham Highway in West Jordan, knocking over or snapping a series of power poles. Rocky Mountain Power reported that 37 large transmission poles and 4 smaller distribution poles were damaged and had to be replaced. This temporarily knocked out power to about 3,000 customers, as well as closing State Route 111 for several hours. The downed power lines also dragged a couple of metal poles supporting traffic signals to the ground. Despite the destruction, two sensors very close to the intersection (the SR-85 at Dannon Way sensor and the Trans-Jordan Landfill sensor) only recorded peak wind gusts of 45 mph and 42 mph respectively.
A strong line of thunderstorms moved through the Salt Lake Valley. Recorded wind gusts included 76 mph at the Salt Lake City International Airport FAA sensor, 65 mph at the Salt Lake City International Airport ASOS, and 64 mph at the Baccus/SR-111 sensor. Damage from this thunderstorm included large trees knocked down in the Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake City, power poles knocked down along I-80 west of the Salt Lake City International Airport, and damage to the Airport fences, hangers, and signs.
