What the reports say
Written by National Weather Service staff at the time of the event · public domain
A line of thunderstorms developed in response to a cold front moving through the southeastern Texas Panhandle during the late evening hours of the 11th. As the line moved over the town of Miami (Roberts County), a law enforcement official reported nickel size hail (0.88 inch). After producing this hail the line continued to slowly move to the east.
Evening thunderstorms produced hail up to golf ball-size. The greatest damage occurred in Sanford where the large hail did over $50K damage to roofs, windows and automobiles. Most of these reports came from sheriff offices and Skywarn spotters. The Department of Public Safety reported a brief tornado in eastern Moore county. It was over open country.
An upper trough combined with a dryline over the eastern portions of the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles and produced several severe thunderstorms. Dime- to golfball-size hail was reported by spotter networks, police department and sheriff's offices.
