Strong to severe convection developed along the higher terrain of far west Texas and extreme northern Mexico during the afternoon of the 5th. An isolated supercell thunderstorm tracked east across southern Culberson County during the evening hours. Large hail accumulated along U.S. Highway 90 south of Van Horn. The Texas Department of Transportation reported hail remained and continued to cover grassy areas at 08:00 CST on the morning of the 6th, some twelve hours after the storm.
Ping pong ball size hail fell over extreme northeastern Culberson County just west of U.S. Highway 285 during the late evening of the 17th. A National Weather Service volunteer Skywarn spotter surveyed the area the following day, and found evidence of large hail in the scarred landscape where one and a half inch craters littered the open range land.
One inch hail was reported along U.S. Highway 90 in the Lobo community. The storm was a severe single cell that formed when upslope southeasterly winds blew into the Van Horn Mountains west of Lobo. Dew point temperatures were near 50 degrees.
