An intense hail storm slowly back-built over the southwest side of Spartanburg. Quarter to golf ball size hail fell in the West Spartanburg and Roebuck areas. Two |auto dealerships on Reidville Rd just to the west in Interstate 26 had extensive damage to their inventory. Several residences in this area received roof damage from hail as well.
A severe thunderstorm caused high winds near Campobello which blew down trees, damaged some sheds, and destroyed a satellite dish. Dime-size hail also fell. Other thunderstorms across the upstate produced pea- to marble-size hail and locally heavy rain.
A rotating thunderstorm moved from central Greenville County across Spartanburg County and Cherokee County before weakening. Although it contained a well defined wall cloud and funnel cloud south of the Greenville/Spartanburg Airport it did not become severe until it reached eastern Spartanburg County. There it produced large hail and some wind damage in the form of downed trees and power lines. At least one tree fell on a car and power was knocked out to about 1,000 people for several hours.
