Flood in Albany County, New York

Heavy rain led to widespread flooding of small streams and creeks across the county, which began during the morning hours of Monday, April 16th, and persisted into late Monday evening on the 16th.|Widespread flooding led to numerous road closures, including Miller Road off Route 9W in Coeymans, Route 32 in New Scotland between Lagrange Lane and Winne Lane, and Creble Road between Elm Avenue and South Albany Road in Bethlehem Center. In addition, evacuations occurred along Coeymans Creek.|Furthermore, a fatality and injury occurred as a brother and sister, ages 14 and 15, respectively, canoed into the rain swollen Basic Creek in Westerlo when the canoe tipped over around 17:00 EST. The female drowned, being swept away by strong currents within the creek. She was pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center at 21:02 EST on the 16th. The male was able to reach the shore.

Heavy rain, combined with frozen ground and snowmelt led to flooding in several portions of Albany county. ||Flooding was reported at the corner of Fuller Road and Western Avenue near Stuyvesant Plaza, which resulted in a road closure.||Flooding was also reported on Central Avenue, at the Albany City line, which resulted in two lane closures.||In addition, the southbound lane of Osborne Road in Loudonville was under water and closed.||Miller Road near Coeymans was also closed, as Coeymans Creek overflowed its banks.||Several other roads were reportedly closed due to flooding in Colonie and Guilderland. One home in Westmere on Willey Street sustained damage as 4 feet of water entered the basement, ruining two boats, a woodworking shop, furnace and hot water heater. Preliminary damage estimates were $50,000.

Basement flooding was reported in the City of Albany, with the worst flooding around Exchange, Corning and Sumpster Streets where some basements were filled up to the first floor. The tenants of about a dozen housing units, single-family homes and apartments, were temporarily evacuated.
