A few fences were blown down and minor shingle damage to a few homes. One vehicle had all the windows blown out. The three people inside suffered minor injuries from the flying broken glass. Along Fannin Landing Circle several more trees and large limbs were also blown down. Other trees were blown down in the Buckingham neighborhood with 1 tree down on a car. Winds were estimated around 70 mph.
Significant and extensive straight line wind damage occurred across portions of west central and central Rankin County as a line of intense storms move through the Metro area. An extensive swath of wind damage occurred on the southern side of the Metro tornado. Wind gusts ranged between 80 and 100 mph which caused hundreds of trees to get knocked down along with numerous power lines and several billboard and road signs. Many trees fell on homes as well as vehicles. The hardest hit areas were across portions of Flowood, generally from the Dogwood Festival Mall, Old Fannin Road and along Highway 25 to Grants Ferry Road.
An intense and long duration downburst event occurred across a large part of Rankin county during the evening of May 20th. Damage began north of Brandon, near the Langford Community, and continued south-southwest along a path through Flowood, Pearl, Richland, Whitfield, Florence, Cleary and Whites. This damage path was nearly 25 miles long and some 7 miles wide. All within the damage swath, several hundred trees were uprooted, snapped or partially broken off. Many trees took down power lines and fell on homes. Many roads were blocked by downed trees and debris as well as having many large and small street and highway signs blown down. Many homes sustained damage to roofs or had sheds/porches blown down.
