Large hail up to the size of baseballs to softballs or larger fell in a swath from west of Brooksville to around the Prairie Point area. An NWS survey team and the Mississippi State Climatologist measured a near-record hail stone after it was frozen in an air tight bag. The stone, which measured 4.88 inches or (4-7/8 inches), fell on the southwest side of Brooksville near Macon Lynn Creek Road. This was the 2nd largest hail stone ever recorded in the state. Mississippi State University Extension specialists reported significant crop losses in affected cotton and soybean fields of up to 50 percent or even complete loss in some cases.
A swath of 70 to 80 mph winds occurred from an intense thunderstorm which moved south across central Noxubee County from near Brooksville to Macon. Numerous trees along with several power lines and power poles were blown down along the path and around Macon. Several homes and businesses suffered roof damage and a few business sings were blown down as well. One home sustained roof damage from a fallen tree along Piney Woods Road.
This weak tornado touched down about four miles northeast of Macon and moved northeast across the county. The storm travelled eight miles and dissipated about 12 miles northeast of Macon. The maximum width of the tornado path was 50 yards. The tornado significantly damaged eleven barns. Three sheds were destroyed. Three houses sustained minor roof damage. One 75-foot grain silo was damaged. A small airplane hanger was destroyed. A plane inside of the hanger sustained significant damage. Two cattle trailers were turned over, along with a farm tractor with its windows blown out. Numerous trees were either twisted or snapped off about four to five feet above the ground along the edges of fields.
