An apparent downburst from a severe thunderstorm caused considerable damage in the community of Anacoco. Several large trees were toppled in the town as well as large branches being ripped from trees. At least one small truck and several house roofs were damaged by fallen trees and limbs. Air conditioning units were also blown off the roof of an elementary school. Trees were also downed by strong wind gust near Hornbeck.
Leesville Daily Leader newspaper reported two large chicken houses were destroyed at the Merriman Farm on Wolf Hill Road at B Hall Loop northeast of Hornbeck, with the loss of 22,000 chickens. An NWS Storm Survey determined damage was likely from a microburst that spread from southeast to northwest across the farm. A few trees were also blown down in the area.
Severe thunderstorms moved into Vernon Parish from northeast Texas, resulting in 70 mph winds, and causing considerable damage to a department store in Leesville. The high winds blew down one wall of the department store, and the store's inventory of electrical appliances and stereo equipment was damaged or ruined.
