Thunderstorm Wind in Hardin County, Kentucky

Department of Emergency Service reports three mobile home parks received substantial damage. Forty-six minor injuries were also reported throughout the county. In all, 421 homes were damaged and 100 destroyed across the county. Damage was estimated at $10.9 million across the county including $6 million in Vine Grove and $3.5 million in Radcliff. The damage was attributed to downburst winds up to 120 mph with embedded weak F1 tornadoes not out of the question.

A storm survey confirmed damage from a wet microburst that damaged many trees and several buildings just northwest of Ratcliff. The area surveyed covered an area roughly one half mile wide and 2 to 3 miles in length. Based on damage, northwest winds gusted as high as 70 to 75 mph. Along with many downed trees, two homes on Kingswood Road near Hillcrest Road had large sections of their roof taken off and thrown several hundred yards to the southwest. Several homes on Scenic Drive has substantial garage and siding damage. Two businesses at a strip mall just off of Highway 31W had sections of their roof damaged. Hail up to penny size fell for 20 minutes and produced some drifts up to one foot high.

Radar data indicated a large area of strong inbound velocity along a path east of the couplet that caused the third tornado along that storm's path. Damage first was noted to an open small barn along Salt River Rd, just south of Four Corners. High resolution satellite imagery indicated a large incoherent patch of trees damaged just west of Salt River Rd south of Berrytown Rd. Additional trees were noted on ground survey damage along Salt River Rd just south of New Salem Church Rd. Another barn and silo were damaged near the intersection of Berrytown Rd and DeWitt Ln. Damage continued upstream along Rineyville Rd where a larger outdoor garage had its roof peeled off before the tornado entered into Meade County.
