What the reports say
Written by National Weather Service staff at the time of the event · public domain
Personal weather station measured wind gust of 58 mph. The wind damage occurred on the north side of a small thunderstorm complex moving through the area, where evaporative cooling of anvil precipitation likely bolstered downdraft strength.
Thunderstorm wind gusts estimated at over 60 mph severely damaged some grain bins in the Villisca area and caused widespread tree damage as well. Some of the fallen trees damaged homes and vehicles and the winds were accompanied by hail at least golf ball-size which also damaged vehicles and homes.
Thunderstorm wind gusts estimated at around 70 mph caused damage to outbuildings, grain bins and trees around the Viking Lake area. This damage could have either been associated with the tornado that a NWS storm survey determined to have touched down northeast of the lake, or from rear-flank downdraft winds from the storm.
