Strong thunderstorm winds estimated at 45 to 50 mph, produced 3-4 foot waves which capsized two boats and caused a third boat to tip severely. A 20 foot Sea Ray capsized with 2 adults and 5 children on board. All children were wearing life jackets, however two became trapped in the cabin and drowned when the boat overturned. A third child died the following day at a local hospital, from injuries sustained in the accident. One adult received minor injuries. An air-boat with 8 persons on-board also capsized, but with no injuries. A motor boat tipped severely and all on-board fell into the water. One person sustained a severed finger.
Region of sporadic straight-line wind damage approximately 1.5 miles in length. Between 12 and 25 homes with structural damage, two with major damage and most others consisting of minor damage. Many homes were damaged due to falling trees or tree branches onto roofs. Radar indicated severe squall line with bow echo feature crossing the region of damage.
A NWS storm survey confirmed a very intense straight-line wind event occurred in Mascotte-Groveland, as a portion of a strong squall line (bow echo) accelerated east to northeast across southern Lake County. Peak winds were estimated between 75 and 95 mph, along a 1.5 mile swath, with a damage width of 350 yards. The area of damaging winds began in extreme east-central Sumter County and continued northeast into Lake County, crossing Tuscanooga Road near Honeycut Road. Preliminary damage estimates in Lake County indicate five homes and a church were damaged, with one of the homes being destroyed. Numerous trees were snapped and some were also uprooted.
