Several areas of the Coachella Valley experienced urban flooding on the 21st as another round of heavy rain moved through the region. A Ross store in Palm Springs sustained large amounts of damage as a 20 by 30 foot section of roof collapsed around 945 PST. The collapse also broke pipes for the fire sprinkler system. One store employee suffered minor injuries.
The CBS affiliate in Los Angeles reported two westbound lanes on the 91 freeway at Green River Road in Corona experienced a 50-yard crack as water penetrated the soil underneath the pavement. An emergency repair of the road took place and multiple lanes were closed.
Heavy rain from a short-lived, intense thunderstorm caused frequent lightning, gusty winds, which downed a few trees, and dumped enough rain to cause minor street flooding. Smoke was also seen from spot fires started by lightning in the mountains near Murrieta.
