What the reports say
Written by National Weather Service staff at the time of the event · public domain
Thunderstorm winds struck the Hill Creek Marina on Greers Ferry Lake, destroying three docks. One of the docks was thrown on top of another dock. At least 80 boats were damaged or destroyed, including some boats that overturned or sank. Lightning detection equipment and Doppler weather radar indicated the storm had only a brief life-span. From the time cloud-to-ground lightning developed until it dissipated was only 20 minutes. Altogether, only 13 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes were detected from the storm. Although people were present at the marina when the storm struck, no one was injured.
Nine residences (houses and mobile homes) were damaged, two of which were destroyed; one metal building collapsed; eight metal barns were severely damaged, two of which were flattened and another of which was destroyed; and six vehicles were damaged, one of which was totaled. A number of trees were blown down. Some of the structural damage was due to falling trees and some of it was caused by the wind alone.
Thunderstorm winds caused damage in a small section of Heber Springs. The roof of a storage building at a building supply business was torn off, with part of the roof landing in Arkansas Highway 25B. At a car dealership, two bay doors were blown in and air conditioning units on top of the building were damaged. At another car dealership, a bay door was blown in, and glass from the door went into an employee's foot. A few trees, power poles, and power lines were blown down.
