Hail from 1.75 to 3.0 inches in diameter fell during a 45 minute period at the Chevelon Ranger Station. 13 vehicles sustained broken windows and severe denting with a damage total of $14,800. Damage to three metal roofs totalled $32,000. Trees were stripped of needles and small branches. The hail accumulated to a depth of three inches.
Accumulating hail on Interstate 40 about 5 miles west of Williams caused at least 9 crashes. Three cars rolled over and six cars slid off the road. One person was ejected from their car. Two people had serious injuries and four people had minor injuries. The Interstate was closed for about 70 minutes while the wrecks were cleared.
A trained spotter reported one inch diameter hail 8 miles east of Mountainaire at 2:48 PM MST. One and a half inch hail was reported in Mountainaire at 3:01 PM. Two inch diameter hail was reported 4 miles east of the Flagstaff Airport at 3:13 PM MST. Two and a half inch hail was reported along Lake Mary Road. Several homes had roof damage.
