A severe thunderstorm produced a hail swath across the central portion of Mobile County from around Semmes to downtown Mobile. Numerous reports of golfball sized hail were received as the storm tracked southeast across the area.
Lightning struck a tree next to the cafeteria at the Eight Mile Elementary School causing a good deal of damage to the school and slightly injuring three students. The three students received minor shocks while using an electric pencil sharpener. The lightning strike damaged electrical equipment in the school as well as breaking 22 windows. Golf ball-size hail was reported near the Mobile Regional Airport located west of the center of Mobile.
At 1215 CST dime-size hail fell at Theodore. At 1450 CST dime-size hail fell at Mobile. At 1500 CST heavy rain caused many streets in the Mobile area to flood. Water became waist deep in some areas. Several creeks spilled over their banks.
