A supercell thunderstorm moved across western Jefferson County and produced a large swath of hail. The largest hail reported was baseball size but the hail may have been larger in surrounding rural areas. Large hail was reported in Sayre, West Jefferson, Hoover, Hueytown, Bessemer, Birmingham and Palmerdale. A few locations observed hail covering the ground. Numerous reports of funnel clouds were also received.
A large hail storm moved over Jefferson County, dropping hail ranging from dime size to golf ball size. Leaves were knocked off some trees. In the Birmingham area, hail was reported at McAdory, Lipscomb, Bessemer, Midfield, Pratt City, and throughout the city of Birminghami including the civic center, university hospital, the Birmingham airport, and Roebuck Plaza.
Three-quarters inch hail was reported at Oxmoor Valley Golf Club in Homewood. One inch hail was reported in the Trace Crossings area of Hoover just south of Interstate 459. Three to four trees were also reported down in Hoover. Dime to golf ball-size hail was reported in Pinson lasting about seven minutes.
