Tornado in Pecos County, Texas

Results from this survey indicated that a tornado began just east of US Highway 35 south of Fort Stockton in rural central Pecos County. This tornado was documented by numerous observers, quickly developing into a photogenic stovepipe before becoming increasingly wrapped in rain. The tornado slowly moved southeast, before completely wrapping in rain and likely dissipating. This tornado occurred over mainly open terrain only causing damage to vegetation and a few wooden electrical power poles in the area. This tornado was rated as a mid-range EF-2 with maximum wind speeds of 125 MPH given the degree of damage to these wooden power poles which were snapped cleanly near the base. Property damage cost amount is an estimation.

A thunderstorm produced a tornado between Fort Stockton and Bakersfield in Pecos County. The thunderstorm tracked eastward along the Interstate 10 corridor. Trained spotters and emergency management witnessed the development of a tornado approximately two miles south of mile marker 279. The tornado traveled approximately two miles east northeast before spotters lost visual of the tornado as it became rain-wrapped. No damage was reported from this tornado and the path width is unknown. The estimated peak wind was 80 mph.

A Pecos County Sheriff's deputy observed a tornado just east of U.S. Highway 385. The deputy described the tornado as a well-developed cone-shaped vortex, approximately 150 yards in width, that remained in open range land for about two minutes as it moved east. The deputy searched the area for damage after the tornado dissipated, and reported "shredded" mesquite trees in the tornado's path. Otherwise, no damage to man-made structures occurred.
