What the reports say
Written by National Weather Service staff at the time of the event · public domain
Large, slow moving, marginally severe thunderstorms developed along the mountains and moved south through the upstate, interacting with left-over tropical air from Tropical Storm Beryl. Trees were pushed over (partly because of the soggy ground as opposed to excessively high winds), large hail fell in some places, and in Mauldin – lightning struck and burned one business to the ground, Heavy rainfall in the mountains caused some minor recurrence of the mudslide problem from earlier in the week.
