NWS meteorologists confirmed a microburst near Muncy in southern Lycoming County around 1640 EDT. Peak thunderstorm winds were estimated near 80 mph based on extensive tree and roof damage. The intense, straight-line downburst winds uprooted or snapped numerous trees, causing structural damage to several homes. One very large tree landed on a vehicle traveling along S. Main Street and resulted in two fatalities.
A severe thunderstorm produced winds around 100 mph near Muncy in Moreland Township. The winds destroyed a large chicken coop, nearly 600 feet by 70 feet, capable of housing over 80,000 chickens (there were no chickens in the structure when the storm hit). A NWS storm survey observed that the sturdy construction was completely uplifted and destroyed by a microburst. There were 6 persons in the structure, but none were injured.
Originally reported as possible tornado damage. However, ground survey indicated that damage was consistent with that of a 60 to 70 mph downburst. Numerous large trees (some in excess of 1 foot in diameter) were blown down in an area approximately 50 feet wide and 300 feet long. Many trees were uprooted in the saturated ground, and a few were snapped off 2 to 3 feet above the ground, apparently by other trees falling on them.
