Thunderstorm Wind in Chester County, Pennsylvania

A severe thunderstorm produced a swath of wind damage from downed trees, tree limbs to downed wires across the northeast half of Chester County. Many roadways were blocked and vehicles damaged by fallen trees. Trees also fell onto the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Hardest hit were Uwchlan, Wallace, West Vincent and Willistown Townships, but wind damage was also reported in North Coventry, Phoenixville, Charlestown, Downingtown, West Whiteland, West Goshen, East Goshen, West Chester, Westtown, Pocopson. Kenneth and Kenneth Square. Nearly 80,000 homes and businesses lost power and it took until June 28th for power to be fully restored. In West Chester, downed trees blocked the entrance to a hospital. Downed trees also damaged a home and garage and crushed a barn. In North Coventry, a downed tree punched a hole in the roof of a home.

A squall line of severe thunderstorms knocked down numerous trees as it moved through Chester County. Approximately 80,000 homes and businesses lost power with thirty roadways closed because of downed trees. Chester County had about a third (17,000) of the remaining southeast Pennsylvania outages on the afternoon of the 9th. West Caln Township still had 5,000 homes and businesses without power that night. Overall, the southern half of the county was hardest hit. Downed trees damaged homes in West Fallowfield, West Caln, Penn and Easttown Townships.

A severe thunderstorm knocked down numerous large trees in Kenneth Square and Kenneth Township. Many homes within Kennett Square sustained water damage after the fallen trees created holes in the roofs. The combination of the damaging winds and lightning across southern Chester County caused power outages that lasted up to twenty-four hours. Of the 45,000 homes and businesses that lost power in the PECO energy service area, Chester County was hardest hit.
