Thunderstorms in northwest and north-central North Carolina during the afternoon hours on the 16th produced damaging lightning and hail up to golf ball-size. Hail up to nickel-size in combination with winds of 40 to 50 mph damaged the tobacco crop from two and a half miles northeast to five miles south-southeast of Ronda. Hail up to dime-size damaged the tobacco crop five miles southwest of Mount Airy. Lightning hit a house two miles southeast of Mount Airy which resulted in minimal damage.
