The hailstorm left much of the Clovis area battered by hail up to the size of golf balls. The majority of the damage occurred in the northeastern portion of the community. Over 1600 home and auto claims were submitted to insurance companies.
Late evening thunderstorms developed in east-central New Mexico and produced an estimated $2 million damage across the city. Most of the damage was consistent with microburst type winds and hail. There could have been a small embedded tornado, but this could not be confirmed. Mobile homes were blown over, power poles snapped, roofs, autos (including a couple of new car dealerships), and numerous businesses received significant wind and hail damage.
The NMSU Agricultural Science Center northeast of Clovis reported major damage from a severe hail storm. Hail estimated at least to the size of hen eggs produced a major crop loss at the facility. Damage amounts are estimated.
