Severe Weather History is built entirely on public-domain U.S. government data. Every figure on this site traces back to an official federal source:

  • NOAA/NCEI Storm Events Database — events, magnitudes, casualties, property & crop damage, narratives (tornadoes 1950+, hail & thunderstorm wind 1955+, all types 1996+).
  • FEMA National Risk Index — county risk ratings, expected annual loss and social vulnerability.
  • FEMA OpenFEMA — federal disaster declarations.
  • U.S. Census Bureau — population and housing context.
  • NOAA/NWS api.weather.gov — live active warnings.

All of these datasets are freely available from the agencies above. This site organizes and presents them for easy reference; it does not host bulk data downloads. For the raw source files, visit the agency links on our methodology page.
