A microburst occurred near Wilbraham resulting in significant tree damage. Hundreds of trees were downed, some across roads, others into buildings. Ten to twenty roads or portions of roads were closed at any one time, thanks to trees and power lines down across them. The greatest concentration of wind damage was located in Wilbraham along an approximately 2 mile long path that extended from just north of Springfield Street across the Country Club of Wilbraham to just beyond Tinkham Road. Based on tree damage, the strongest winds were estimated to have been between 90 and 100 mph and occurred over a path that averaged 250 yards extending to 600 yards at its widest point along Springfield Road. Outside of this path, wind damage was less significant but still occurred for a half a mile on either side of the strongest wind core.
A wet microburst occurred between 459 PM and 5 PM EDT in Longmeadow, MA. According to the Emergency Management Director, about 200 trees were downed. Damage cost about $400,000 to clean up. The damage began just west of Route 5 and was maximized in the section of town near Longmeadow Brook and Frank Smith Road. A few trees were down onto houses. There were no injuries reported.
Damaging winds peeled two roofs off of neighboring apartment buildings in Holyoke's Flats neighborhood, at the intersection of West Street and East Dwight Street. A total of 140 residents ended up being displaced/homeless (47 families). Bricks from one of the buildings crashed onto West Street, damaging several cars. Some wooden support beams also rained onto the streets below. Amazingly, no injuries were reported. Damage figures approximate only.
