What the reports say
Written by National Weather Service staff at the time of the event · public domain
A damage survey confirmed that straight line winds estimated around 80 mph caused sporadic tree and branch damage along with some minor damage to homes in and near Oil City. One large tree was uprooted onto a home in Oil City, killing a 75 year old man inside.
Strong downburst winds (macroburst) toppled numerous trees and powerlines. Numerous homes were also damaged from the toppled trees and over 70,000 homes and business suffered power outages. Also damaged were eleven hangers and five light airplanes at the downtown airport in Shreveport. Power outages were so extensive that it took four days to restore power in the effected areas.
Thunderstorms moved across extreme northwest Caddo Parish downing numerous trees and powerlines. The entire town of Vivian was left without power and Highway 1 from Vivian to Rodessa was closed due to tree blockage. One man was injured when a tree fell across a house pinning a man to his bed until fire fighters could remove the tree. So much damage was reported that extra power crews from Dallas, Texas and Little Rock, Arkansas were called in to help with repair work. There were two motor vehicle accidents, one of which involved a driver trapped in a vehicle with a tree on top of it. The driver was not injured.
