A long-track supercell produced 25 known reports of large hail over a 30 mile path from 12 N of Colby to near Oakley over a period of about 90 minutes. Hail sizes ranged from golf ball to grapefruit size. Windows were broken, roofs heavily damaged, skylights broken and equipment destroyed. Approximately 35,000 acres of cropland were affected by the storm. Sources included public, Thomas County Farm Service Agency, amateur radio, spotters and the NSSL Shave project.
Report of ping pong ball to golf ball sized hail at location to start. Hail size then increased to egg size at 5:53 PM CDT and then increased to up to baseball size or slightly larger. Time based on reports and radar imagery.
The hail ranged from half dollar to tennis ball size. Many downtown businesses lost windows. The school lost 34 windows. Some of the glass was embedded in the gym floor from the hail and wind. At least one corn field near town was completely destroyed.
