What the reports say
Written by National Weather Service staff at the time of the event · public domain
WTHR-13 reported that Indiana Conservation officers found the body of 26-year-old man around 7:30pm Sunday the 3rd while searching Monroe Lake with side scan sonar equipment. He was in about 15 feet of water near the area where he had been swimming from his boat.||An Indiana Department of Natural Resources spokesperson said the man was swimming off a pontoon he rented with three friends when he disappeared Friday evening as a thunderstorm with strong winds passed overhead.||Friends say the man was a good swimmer, which might have been why he went into the water without a life jacket. When a storm suddenly kicked up out on the lake though, it was too much for him.
Thunderstorm winds produced scattered damage around southern portion of Monroe Lake. Several trees were snapped at the Hardin Ridge Recreation Area, including one into a tent injuring a camper; while the wind rolled another tent several feet, including contents and several people, none of whom were injured. The nearby Fourwinds Marina was impacted by downed trees, damage to docks and walkways, and some damage to boats on the lake, while about 100 people were stranded on the docks. Along the lake's southwestern shore considerable tree damage occurred to the Pedigo Bay Drive community with one home's roof partially blown off.
Three trees were blown down along State Route 45 due to damaging thunderstorm wind gusts. Two of the downed trees were at the intersection of State Route 45 and Russell Road. The other downed tree was just southwest of town. Two of the three trees looked healthy. Both instances of trees down at State Route 45 and Russell Road hit homes and caused minor roof damage.
