Central and southern Escambia county experienced historic flooding the night of April 29th into the early morning of April 30th. Nearly 2 feet of rain fell across portions of southern Escambia County. Pensacola International Airport recorded a storm total of 20.47 inches. 1687 residential homes suffered major flooding with 12 inches of water or more. 1518 residential homes suffered minor flooding with less than 12 inches of water. 13 homes were destroyed. 117 commercial businesses experienced major damage. ||Widespread infrastructure damage, totaling $90 million, occurred with numerous roads, bridges, and drainage systems heavily damaged or destroyed. ||Numerous water rescues took place during the height of the event due to the rapid rise of water. A 67 year old Pensacola woman drowned when her vehicle was submerged by flood waters on U.S. 29 near Cantonment, FL.
Heavy rains again caused numerous streets to flood in the southern parts of the county. Rainfall totals of six to eight inches in a twelve hour period caused water to pond in several locations. Many drainage systems were also still clogged from debris from Ivan and caused water to pond more quickly than would normally occur. Several bridges suffered damage from the heavy rains and had to be closed for a few days until workers could repair them. From March 31 through April 7, it was estimated that 12 to 22 inches of rain fell across the southern parts of the county.
Heavy rains that began on March 31 and continued into April 1, caused flooding in the central and southern parts of the county. Numerous roads had to be closed for several hours because of the heavy rains. It was estimated that seven to twelve inches of rain fell across the area in a 24 hour period. Pensacola Regional airport had to delay several flights due to the heavy rains. About 100 of people had to be evacuated in the south part of the county because of rising water from a swollen creek. Construction along I-10 caused water to pond along the interstate and some of the lanes had to be closed for hours. No injuries occurred.
