Torrential rain moved across the eastern parts of Pamlico County during the evening of September 30th as the remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole moved north across the region. This rain fell on saturated ground from very heavy rain the previous few days. Significant flash flooding developed especially for areas along Highway 55 from Bayboro west. a few roads were flooded and closed with minor damage to a few homes.
A tornado associated with Hurricane Isaias formed just offshore in the |Neuse River, and then moved over a small waterfront community in Kennel |Beach, with one large pine tree snapped that fell on a home along Pine |Road. The tornado produced additional tree damage along Live Oak Road |and Pecan Lane as it moved NNW towards swamps and forested lands. |Another area of snapped pine trees was found along a rural logging road |off South Goose Creek Road. The tornado then continued NW, producing an |area of enhanced tree damage to hardwoods and softwoods along the western |end of Goose Creek Road in Grantsboro. It should be noted that the tornado |likely lifted and descended during its path through western Pamlico County|before dissipating over swampy areas of Cypress Creek upstream of Goose |Creek.
A tornado touched down near Lowland. The damage path started toward the north end of Fulford Point Road and consisted of numerous softwood trees snapped, some hardwoods that were uprooted and a utility pole that was destroyed. The path continued to the intersection of Lowland Road and Fulford Point Road where numerous trees were blow downs and softwood trees were snapped. The damage path may have continued farther to the southwest but was not accessible to us. With less than 10 softwoods snapped in any given area the maximum winds were kept on the lower end of the scale or around 90 MPH. The time was based on radar data.
