Fire began when an old controlled burn site rekindled in mid afternoon. Brisk northeast winds, brought on by a vigorous and very dry arctic front passing southwestward across the area, fanned the flames west and southwestward. Behind the front, extremely dry air resulted in humidities approaching as low as 10%. Recent spruce bark beetle killed trees resulted in plenty of fuel for the fire. Damage was confined to open areas.
Heavy rains, indirectly brought about by a subtropical low near Kodiak, resulted in heavy rains in several areas of the Susitna drainage basin. Total rainfall amounts between 2 and 2.5 inches were recorded during less than 24 hours around Talkeetna. Several other remote gauges recorded heavy rainfall in the 2 inch range. Reports received from the State Troopers and Emergency managers indicated that water in several smaller rivers and creeks came up to bankfull levels with very localized minor flooding near campgrounds. A Flash Flood Watch was issued at 2:30 pm (ADT) Thursday, August 12th for streams and small rivers in the Susitna Valley (including those draining south and southeast from the western Alaska Range). The Watch was cancelled at 10:30 pm Thursday, then reissued 3:30 am Friday…finally discontinued again at 9 am Friday.
Heavy rains moved into the Upper Susitna Valley late Thursday, associated with a stalled front across the area. Rain ended Friday.Reported rainfall amounts at the Talkeetna ASOS reached 1.95 inches for the 24 hour period ending at 10 am Friday…most of which fell in less than 12 hours. A flash flood watch was issued for streams and rivers east of the Parks Highway and in the Upper Susitna Basin early Friday, then cancelled late Friday afternoon. Reports indicated cottonwood trees flowing down Clear Creek Friday morning. Wiggle Creek was reported to be at bankfull.
