A near severe thunderstorm drifted over Adjuntas during the afternoon causing heavy rainfall which caused the loss of a life as river Yayales, a small tributary of river Guilarte, surged out of its banks and flowed across the intersections of roads 131 and 135. A 59 year old woman drove a car into the moving waters, attempted to escape her car and was drowned.
Heavy rains that began on Christmas evening persisted through early Christmas Day. Around 250 families were affected by the rains and floods. The worst hit area was the Aibonito town and the San Luis sector. Many homes close to the river and the town were flooded, as well as Barrios La Plata, Pasto, and Cuyon. Flood water levels rose to around 3 feet in some of the properties. USGS river gauge at Rio de la Plata at Proyecto La Plata rose above flood stage to 18.77 feet. Twenty seven persons were rescued from the flash floods.
Several sectors of the San Sebastian municipality were reported flooded, Barrio Juncal, Guatemala, Pueblo Nuevo, and several downtown streets. River Guatemala was reported out of its banks at Barrio Guatemala flooding the Fey Mendez Park and some nearby businesses. Another stream was reported out of its banks at Comunidad Gonzalez near the 4H park.
