A line of thunderstorms moved eastward across the Wind River Basin and Lander Foothills and brought high wind gusts. The maximum gust reported was 69 mph at the Riverton airport. Other notable gusts included 66 mph at the Lander airport and 58 mph at Shoshoni. There were numerous reports of large tree limbs blown down in Riverton with the strong wind. On Ocean Lake near Riverton WY, a kayak was capsized and two men were thrown into the water. One was rescued by a nearby boater, but the other could not be found and was presumed dead by the Fremont County Sheriff (Sheriff Office press release from July 5, 2023).
Very strong winds occurred with a thunderstorm outflow gust front on Boysen Reservoir As the gust front hit the northeastern shore near the marina, the winds tipped several campers setup at a campground, at least two of which were severely damaged. The winds also blew a carport over 100 yards. A NWS storm survey determined that straight line wind speeds of 70 to 80 mph likely caused the damage. No injuries were reported with this event.
Thunderstorm wind gusts measured as high as 74 mph caused damage to more than a dozen mature trees at the Riverton Country Club. A 40-foot spruce tree was toppled and several limbs up to nine inches in diameter were brought down during the storm. Rainfall of one-half inch to upwards of one inch came down in sheets. The storm generally followed Riverview Road on the south side of U.S. Highway 26. One rancher claimed it was the hardest he had seen it rain in his 35 years at his location near Kinnear.
