A cold front moved slowly across Vermont during the night of August 9th with a severe thunderstorm moving across southern Lake Memphramagog causing damage in Newport. Thunderstorm winds tore part of the roof off a hardware store and caused extensive damage to a sports center, destroyed a boathouse and downed or uprooted numerous trees. In addition numerous signs were damaged and eight cars were destroyed as trees and signs fell on them.
